Balearic Island History
The Balearic Islands have actually been inhabited since prehistoric times or from around 5000 BC.
Over many years, there has been numerous pre historical findings on the Balearic Islands which have been of importance. Menorca along has offered some 500 findings.
Mallorca was conquered in 1229 by Jaime I, Spanish kingdom Aragon. He then left the Island to his son (Jaime II) and as an independent kingdom, but then in 1243, it became again part of Aragon.
Menorca though became part of Aragon in 1231 some 12 years before Mallorca. The island was also attacked by pirates, many fortifications still remind on the Islands from that epoch. In the 18th century, as a consequence of the treaty of Utrecht, Menorca actually belonged to the British empire, and the architectonical style, (more so of Mahón) is influenced by that fact.
After a very short French domination the island then became part of Spain in 1802, by the treaty of Amiens.
Findings on Ibiza prove to that Ibiza was an important Carthaginean colony. From 707 it was dominated by Moors, until they were thrown off the Island by Jaime I. Also both Ibiza and Formentera where attacked by pirates at this time, the latter was left by the population for a short period of time.
